Lorna Varrie : artist

Dad taking my photoGrowing up on the Texas high plains shaped my perspective for learning about myself and the world. Wonder and awe of the vastness of nature inspired me to express myself and appears in my artwork as open spaces, tornados, light and energy, along with explorations of imagination and reality, pathways to something boundless. I experienced a feeling of smallness in the panoramic sea of land with everything bowing to the force of wind and sky, yet a flowing sense of possibilities within & beyond, relating with the hand of creation.

While at the University of Texas at Austin I studied a semester at La Poggerina, Italy which expanded my experiences and world view, along with further visits to Italy, Mexico City, England, Turkey, South Africa and Lesotho. I also received a scholarship for neoclassical training at Kirk Richards Atelier. My work was included in a number of shows after college and a particularly excellent one at ArtQuest.

After moving to Houston, I worked on a lithography project with master printer Peter Webb of Strike Editions from the Tamarind Institute. The lithographs from that project are on my Fine Art page. A critique session at Diverse Works led to a curated show which was in the Art and America Annual Guide that year, and my work was selected as the cover image on Susie Kalil’s article “Deep in the Art of Texas” in the Houston Press.

I live in Dallas now where I continue my artwork.
